Cori Marquis

 

Hailing from Mesa, AZ, Marquis is a NYC-based choreographer, dancer, and teacher. As a choreographer, Marquis has created nearly a dozen evening-length and shorter works under the moniker Cori Marquis + the Nines [IX], presented by Dance Now @ Joe's Pub, Duo Multicultural Arts Center, The Yard on Martha's Vineyard, Triskelion Arts, Gowanus Art + Production, Dixon Place, Symphony Space, SoakingWET at the West End Theater, STUFFED! at Judson Church, Chen Dance Center, White Wave, FAB, and more. Cori's work has toured to Portland, OR; Detroit, MI; Boston, MA; Martha's Vineyard, MA; Phoenix, AZ; and Stanford, CA.

 

Cori was the recipient of the 2014 Bessie Shonberg Mentorship Residency at the Yard on Martha’s Vineyard, and was an an artist in residence at DMAC (2012) and Chen Dance Center (2011). She was a panelist for Dance+ Festival (OR), and is a recipient of the Friends of Dance Scholarship and Louis Sudler Prize in Creative Arts.


Aside from producing her own work, Cori also has the extreme pleasure of co-choreographing as part of the collaborative trio, LMnO3 (2014), and dancing and touring internationally with Guggenheim Fellow and Bessie Award-winning choreographers Doug Elkins (2010) and Jane Comfort (2015). Cori's work with doug elkins choreography, etc

includes Fräulein Maria, Mo(or)town|Redux, Scott, Queen of Marys, Hapless Bizarre, O, round desire, and Kinsugi. Cori has also danced with Liz Gerring, Parijat Dasai, Hope Mohr, Anabella Lenzu, Hee Ra Yoo, and others.

 

In 2013, she was the rehearsal director for Elkins' work with the Young Dancemakers Company, under director Alice Teirstein. She has taught contemporary and partnering classes in Oregon (Reed College, Jefferson Dancers, Conduit Dance), Arizona (Dance United, Highland High School), Martha’s Vineyard (The Yard), and New York (BAX, Flowers with Care). She graduated from Stanford University in 2008 with a BA in Psychology and Performing Arts (Phi Beta Kappa and with distinction).

 

LMnO3

 

The collaborative trio LMnO3 (Deborah Lohse, Cori Marquis and Donnell Oakley) met in 2010 while working with Doug Elkins in Fräulein Maria, joyfully launching into a choreographic partnership in 2014. Their first evening-length piece, B.A.N.G.S.: made in america, was commissioned by DANCE NOW NYC and premiered in 2016 at Joe’s Pub at The Public Theater. LMnO3 took B.A.N.G.S. on the road to American Dance Festival, SUNY Brockport, MusikFest in PA, DANCE NOW Boston, Denver’s Clocktower Cabaret, The Yard on Martha’s Vineyard, Dance Place in DC, and Ringling International Arts Festival in Sarasota, FL with an encore presentation at Joe’s Pub in 2017 by DANCE NOW. Their second album, More Like Your Mom, began at Triskelion Arts in May 2017, and appeared at 92Y and DANCE NOW Boston in 2018. Short works and excerpts have been performed at Judson Church, WestFest, Triskelion Arts, Gibney Dance Center, New Haven's Elm City Dance Collective, and The Yard’s Follies: Women Dance the Comic. Residencies include DANCE NOW’s Silo, The Lumberyard, SUNY Brockport, The Croft, Peaceable Barn, Fourth Arts Block, The Floor, and The Joyce’s Artist Residency Center at Gibney.
